Statement regarding Tuberculosis outbreak at the Aurora GEO facility

For several weeks, we had been trying to confirm alleged reports of a Tuberculosis (TB) outbreak at the Aurora GEO facility. While we heard first-hand allegations from our guests, we did not have concrete evidence to openly speak about it. Today, several trusted outlets reported that up to at least 12 individuals have been confirmed to have tested positive for TB at the Aurora GEO facility within the last week.

The safety and well-being of our guests, volunteers, and staff have always been important to Casa. In light of this new development and as a precaution, we are urging any volunteer who has come in contact with one of our guests at Casa de Paz or anyone entering the Aurora GEO facility for a visitation, to take the precautionary measures to ensure your well-being. As of the time of this statement, Casa de Paz has not been informed by any prior guest, current volunteer, or staff member to have shown any symptoms of TB, which according to the CDC website consist of fever, night sweats, weight loss, loss of appetite, cough lasting more than 3 weeks, coughing up blood, chest pain, or shortness of breath. Please follow this link for a complete list of symptoms: https://www.cdc.gov/tb/hcp/clinical-signs-and-symptoms/index.html

Casa’s Timeline:

Unverified case sometime the week of 6/24/2026

  • We received information that someone was brought into the facility and placed in a dorm before the results of their intake TB skin test. It is our understanding that getting a TB skin test is part of the intake process for the facility. We did not hear further details around TB and were unable to verify any information.

During the week of 7/6/2026

  • We started receiving information of more confirmed TB cases.

  • A guest at Casa de Paz stated that a person was removed from Charlie South on 7/6/2026 after experiencing respiratory symptoms.

  • This same guest stated that people detained were re-tested for TB and it is unclear how many cases were confirmed.

  • Guests released reports not receiving results for their tests.

  • Released guests reported people detained are being transferred between Bravo and Charlie due to AC issues and there are no clear signs of quarantine for folks who might have been exposed.

  • We observed guards wearing masks at the facility starting the week of 7/6/2026.

We appreciate your support during all that we are dealing with.
